Eduardo Recife

As a child he filled his school books with drawings instead of notes and created tattoos on his friends with a black ink pen. From an early age, there was never any question of what Brazilian artist Eduardo Recife would be when he grew up.

A prolific and talented artist, he has created 23 typefaces and his glorious illustrations have been used in hundreds of the world's most prestigious magazines and publications including The New York Times. He has also exhibited in the US, Belgium, Brazil, Lithuania and Mexico.

Eduardo's work is full of dualities, rich textures and patterns. Joyful vintage imagery is given a modern twist to create artworks that borrow from the past to convey a powerful contemporary message.

'Be your best friend' is the title of Eduardo's picture for lavie & belle. Nostalgic and childlike elements are combined in this bold symmetrical portrayal of two near-identical girls.

"The message of my picture is very simple but it is one of the most difficult things we have to do as a human being," he says. "Look in the mirror and love yourself because only by doing this can you be a true friend to others."
