Julia Freund
Julia Freund was born in Germany and initially followed an academic path, studying science and literature.
After a month-long language course in France, however, her life changed direction completely. The country worked its spell and her artistic talents flourished. In Aix-en-Provence and Paris, she studied graphic design and illustration, then launched her career as a freelance illustrator for publications such as Le Monde and Le Magazine Littéraire.
Words are the starting point for Julia's projects. She always writes before drawing and finds that this literary approach opens up new visual avenues to her. In her work, she also experiments with combinations of image and text.
'Stand by me' is the title of the picture that she has created for the 'friendship' collection. It tells the story of the power and protection that friendship gives us when we are facing adversity or difficulty in our lives.
"At every step of life's journey there are new people to meet, new friends to make," says Julia whose family name means 'friend'. "You cannot be everyone's darling but friends are the special people with whom we choose to connect. At times when life is difficult we need our friends more than ever because when we stand by each other, we are stronger."
